The Sanskrit meaning of mandala is a container of essence. There are dozens of other translations, most of which describe its circular shape. It is believed that mandala art started as early as 700 BC as a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the Universe. Over time the mandala art form has been adopted by numerous cultures and has been redefined by each. The meanings of modern mandalas have evolved and become multifaceted works of art. The true meaning of a mandala can only be defined by the artist and the viewer. Which today could mean anything or nothing at all.

About the Zendala Tiles:
The geometric flow and circular structure of mandalas seemed to invite the use of the Zentangle Method. It was so natural that the two met to create this beautiful hybrid. The Zendala line embraces as many elements of the Zentangle Method as possible. The tiles can be approached two different ways. You can take a blank tile and use it similarly to a square tile by creating a string and filling it with tangles. The second way would be to use one of the pre-strung templates. All nine of our templates are unique. Some have curvy lines; some have more straight lines. Some have an odd number of points, and some have an even number. They are all hand drawn. Their imperfections soften and bring life to each template.

Class Description:
This class will go through the process of using one of our pre-strung Zendalas. Mandala meets Zentangle in a wonderfully harmonious union that will inspire you to put pen to paper.  Zentangle Zendala® tiles are round, 4-5/8″ (117mm) diameter.
