Class Title            OIL PAINTING Real Simple
Instructor             Doug Whitfield
Dates                    Thursday afternoons, Sept 23, 30, Oct 7, 14, 21, 28 (6 wks)
Times                   3pm – 5pm
Ages                     14 and up
Class Objective to make oil painting less complicated for the beginner or intermediate, in a way that is easier to understand, easier to do and a mere fraction of the cost. This uncluttered, practical manner of oil painting makes the experience more accessible and more enjoyable.
Class Description Comprised of six 2-hour sessions. Maximum 10 beginner and intermediate students (H.S. – adult). Students will learn by doing (no lecture) so actual painting will begin the first session, working from a still life arrangement in the studio/classroom. By dramatically simplifying materials students need to use, less time will be spent working with a traditional color palette, mediums, solvents and assorted theories and rules
Outcome After six sessions, students will have knowledge and practice using a greatly simplified process that when used in whole or part, will provide them great oil painting results on a budget. Students will be able to add colors, medium, and other products if they desire as their basic skill and confidence levels increase. Sometimes people keep it simple for the duration of their practice. Students will have several small paintings to take home when the sessions are completed.
Materials List     Each student will bring to the first and subsequent sessions: table top easel; disposable palette; package of orange bristle, all-purpose artist brushes (Royal Langnickel-Gold Taklon or Folkart-Gold Taklon); small can of boiled linseed oil; odorless paint thinner in a closed jar; 4 gessoed panels or stretched canvases (at least 12″); 1.25 oz. tubes of student-grade oil paint white, black or VanDyke brown, yellow, red, blue; cotton rags or roll of paper towels. Note that cadmium colors are pricey and not necessary at this time, and that most of these materials including the brushes (about 50 cents each in ten packs) are available at WalMart
