WINTER ART CAMP - February 20, 21, 22, 23

Come spend a morning or afternoon with us exploring fun, creative and educational art topics at our very popular Art Camp during the February school vacation. Please register early as we have limited space. Our art teachers are busy planning a very exciting program for this year's campers. Limited scholarships are available.

PAINTING WITH OILS with Kathryn Bartscht

Dates: Dec 5, 19; Jan 2, 16, 30; Feb 13, 27

Kathryn uses the oil painting technique known as wet-on-wet or “alla prima.” This method provides a range of options for creating your painting. It is simply the practice of applying fresh oil paint into existing paint that has not completely dried. Using this technique, completed paintings take a relatively short period of time, commonly only one sitting.

Ms. Bartscht is a certified teacher in this style of painting.

REALISM with CHARCOAL with John Famulare

Students must be 16 years or older

Students will work with a variety of charcoals. Some drawing experience would be helpful but is not required.

John will give short demos emphasizing a particular principle, followed by a great deal of individual attention. Instruction is tailored to each artist, and you will be encouraged to develop and improve your personal style at your own pace. Students need to supply their own materials. A materials list is available through the Arts Center or at time of registration.

Instructor: Famulare earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Union College in Schenectady. He graduated from Little Falls High School with an advanced high honors Regents Diploma.

MIXED MEDIA with Frank Wilcox

Day/Time: Jan 19 - Mar 23, Thursday 9 - 11:30 AM

Students will work with a variety of media (acrylic, oil, pencil, charcoal) at their own pace. Frank will give group demos, and each student will receive a great deal of individual attention. Students need to supply their own materials: oils, acrylics, drawing media, etc.

Instructor: Frank Wilcox has been teaching art since I 960 to students of various levels of ability, including pre-school through adult and special needs students. He received his BS and MS in art at SUC/ New Paltz with minors in art history and painting. He has had one-man shows at MVCA, View, Old Forge Library, Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, and Ilion Library.

ART WITH YUPO PAPER with Joanne DeStefano

This 1-day watercolor workshop focuses specifically on Yupo paper. This class has been popularly requested because of the unconventional and challenging slick surface with intriguing results.

Ms. DeStefano will incorporate the basics but will caution students to “leave it alone,” allowing the medium to do its thing. Creating “happy accidents” will be half the fun and discipline.

Students will supply their own materials. A short materials list will be provided by the Arts Center.

Instructor: Joanne DeStefano has been a long time award-winning artist and instructor for many years. She has a few self-published books, including one available on Amazon, entitled “I See Myself in Your Eyes.” Joanne’s unique style of teaching will confirm that your “someday” is here.

NUDE FIGURATIVE POSE with Yulia Levkovich

Price for On-going Class: $34 per class
Minimum pre-payment of $136 for 4 classes required to secure a class seat. Then pay as you attend per class. Price includes model fees.

This course develops the artist’s ability to represent the figure in pictorial space. Drawing is based on observation from life with attention to proportional accuracy, foreshortening, and the use of form and shadows. Students will work on one complete drawing for the duration of 8 weeks. Students will develop a classical approach to the figure.

Discussions, lectures and critiques will be held during the workshop.

Instructor: Yulia Levkovich is a Representational Painter. She was born in Ukraine and moved to Canada where she was exposed to the Russian School of Painting. She received her BFA from OCAD University in Toronto. In 2006 Yulia moved to Manhattan to pursue her MFA at the New York Academy of Art. Yulia has taught privately, as well as in several institutions, including The New York Academy of Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art. Yulia has exhibited extensively in New York and abroad. MVCA’s new One-Shot-Saturday Series will offer introductory level classes designed to expose students to new methods, new materials, and innovative formats at minimal cost.

During the coming months, students will have new opportunities to try something different without major investments in time or materials. See what you like; see what you DON’T like.

Have you ever wanted to address that exquisite note or gift tag? Perhaps you want to pen your own poetry for framing. This class will introduce students to the beautiful artform of calligraphy. A form of historical European hand-writing that dates from about the 13th Century, Chancery Cursive is considered one of the basic calligraphic fonts. Small materials list is available.

Instructor: Donnalyn Shuster recently retired after a 35 year career as an Art Teacher (K-12). She holds degrees from SUNY Potsdam and St. Lawrence University. A permanently certified NYS educator, Donnalyn has exhibited her artwork throughout Upstate New York and the Mohawk Valley.

ART CLASS with Jim Parker
Wednesday evening classes are on-going.

Students ages 12 to Adult.
Special needs students are always welcome.

From Old English style watercolor painting to Japanese anime characters and manga comic drawing, Jim will work one-on-one with students in whatever style they desire. Class size is limited to 10 students to allow one-on-one instruction.

Instructor: Jim Parker is well-known locally for his historic folk art paintings, which have been commissioned by numerous villages, counties, chambers of commerce, historical societies and centennial committees. Parker concentrates on central New York State and the Adirondack Mountain area of New York State. His original paintings are all watercolors, done in an old English style of building each color.
