Selective Eye Artist of the Month for July - Felicia Hollum

The works of polymer clay artist Felicia Hollum will be highlighted at the Selective Eye Gallery in July, as part of their artist of the month series. The Selective Eye is located at 403 Canal Place in Little Falls. All of the artwork and crafts are original designs and hand-made by regional artist. The Selective Eye Shop has been an integral part of the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts for many years and has proven to be motivational to local artisans who need a venue to market their works of art as well as an outlet for fine affordable art and crafts for the consumer.

On display and for sale are many fine examples of the versatility of polymer clay. Felicia Hollum has created everything from delicate teapots to miniature dolls and ornate jewelry. Polymer clay is a pliable, bendable polymer compound for artists and crafters. It's not true clay - clay is fine particles of silicate suspended in water, whereas polymer clay is fine particles of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) suspended in plasticizer - but it can be used much like clay. What makes polymer clay special is its versatility. It comes in dozens of colors, and you can blend clays together like paints to make your own colors. Since the color is inherent in the particles, you can also work two or more colors together without blending them. Polymer clay doesn't dry out, so you can sculpt and form it without worrying about a time limit. Polymer clay requires only low temperatures for firing, low enough to use a home oven as your kiln. The colors and size are not changed during firing. When fired, the clay gets hard enough to make durable objects, and can be finished in various ways to obtain textures from glassy to stone like.

Felicia Hollum has been working with polymer clay for five years She is a restaurant owner and mother of two, who for most of her busy life has always found time to be creative in some artistic way. After working with numerous art forms and mediums she found polymer clay to be her personal favorite. Hollum is continuously amazed at its versatility. She has learned mostly through experimentation with the medium and the help of books and the internet. The polymer clay community, especially on the internet, is a very open, friendly place where artists are willing to share techniques. Felicia credits the internet community for the inspiration they have given her work.
