Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts is once again presenting its Film Series for 2008.

This Film Series is offered to the community as a way for people to view films that are seldom available in the popular cinema, and they provide exposure to international cultures and music. The films are financially supported by the Arts Center, the New York State Council of the Arts and the Valley Cinema. Because the films are shown in a 35 mm film format, the price of shipping and showing these movies is quite expensive, and the low cost of admission does not cover these expenses. Therefore, twice in the course of the Film Series we conduct special fundraisers to help defray the costs.

The fundraiser films have a set admission price of $12.00 a ticket, and the Center provides refreshments in keeping with the theme of the film. In our first fundraiser film ”Across the Universe” shown on Jan. 27 at 4:00, we will also have a facilitator on hand to lead a brief question and answer period following the screening of the film. People often enjoy the opportunity to share their observations and ideas after the movie, and we will also provide the discussion time again after the screenings of “Lust;Caution, and “The Namesake”. The second scheduled fundraiser is to be held for the screening of the film ”Paris Je T’aime” on February 24, at 4:00. Information regarding that fundraiser will be forthcoming.
The Film Series schedule for 2008 is as follows:

January 13 – Becoming Jane

January 20 – Darjeeling Limited

January 27 – Across the Universe*    Special fundraiser with discussion time

The story is set in Shanghai during W.W.II, and centers around a beautiful woman who has volunteered to seduce and assassinate a dissident politician. This film contains much explicit sex and violence.     Directed by Ang Lee, Chinese with English subtitles

The movie stars Glen Hansard, a European rock star, and is set to beautiful music. Directed by John Carney, the film itself was completed in 17 days and cost only$150,000.00 to produce.

March 9 – The Namesake *   discussion session following the movie
It is the story of a young Indian family torn between two very different cultures by the success factor. Scenes from the movie are set in both Calcutta and upscale New York City. Spectacular photography in both venues is an added plus. Directed by Mira Nair.

March 16 - Sicko
